The Sandy river is less than 30 miles from downtown Portland,
yet is a world away. Quiet and natural, scenic and rich with fish, the Sandy is
not as well known as the mighty Columbia, which it flows into at a spot that
Lewis and Clark called camp over 200 years ago. Today, the Sandy has one of the
best year-round runs of steelhead in
the area. Steelhead runs have doubled in the last 20 years due to good
management and hatchery practices. Hatchery steelhead are a favorite of those
fishing the Sandy in the winter. In addition to steelhead, the Sandy has a
strong spring and summer salmon
population.
The Sandy is drift boat heaven, with great scenery and amazingly
good solitude considering its proximity to Portland. It has great sections for
drifting and lots of room for back casting. And, the Sandy requires patience
and technique. This is truly a fly fishing
enthusiast's dream river for that reason. It rewards those who love good
fishing and a challenge. We offer day trips on the Sandy year round, conditions
permitting. So, if you are in Portland for a day or a week and looking for a
great day of fishing, consider the Sandy.
